But, in recent years, many smaller islands have been stepping up their game to produce unforgettable experiences that offer visitors all the pomp and pageantry of the modern-day parades without the costly costumes and congestion. St. Croix is one such destination with a month-long festival that runs through Christmas into the New Year. When you attend St. Croix’s festival, you’ll find a rich Carnival that’s “small enough in size for a newbie carnivalist to get a feel for carnival and learn new traditions without being overwhelmed.” Indeed, the Crucian Carnival presents a more intimate experience with events each day culminating in an adult parade that features a couple dozen groups with the largest troupe comprising several hundred masqueraders. Carnival Description The Crucian Christmas Festival (or Carnival) is a month long celebration incorporating modern day celebrations with standing traditions. These holiday traditions date back to the early 1800s when enslaved Africans were allowed time off to celebrate Christmas. During this time they dressed up in costumes, paraded through the streets, and visited other plantations. There was also dancing, music and general merrymaking. In 1952, these traditions were revived into an annual organized festival of events that’s come to be known as the Crucian Christmas Carnival. While most of the Carnival action happens in Frederiksted at the official Carnival Village, there are events held island wide. Festival celebrations include musical competitions, pageants for Carnival royalty, and cultural activities. There are also fairs that showcase local arts, crafts, foods, and drinks. The best is saved for last at the culmination of Carnival – the Childrens’ Parade and, finally, the famous Adults’ Parade.
